DGU (Double Glazed Unit) Glass

Also called IGU (Insulated Glass Unit) — is a sealed assembly of two (or more) glass panes separated by a spacer and an air or gas-filled gap. It improves thermal, acoustic, and security performance compared with single glazing.

Thermal insulation: reduced heat transfer, lower U-value, improved energy efficiency.

Solar control: reduced solar heat gain with coated or tinted glass.

Acoustic insulation: better sound attenuation from the air/gas gap and multiple panes.

Condensation reduction: warmer inner pane and lower risk of internal condensation.

Security and safety: can incorporate tempered or laminated glass for impact resistance.

UV protection: low-E and special coatings cut UV transmission, protecting interiors.

In addition to safety, 6.38 mm PVB laminated glass offers good sound insulation, UV protection, and durability, making it suitable for both residential and commercial applications. It also improves security compared to monolithic glass and helps meet building safety standards.

Common classifications

Double-glazed (two panes) — standard DGU.

Triple-glazed (three panes) — higher thermal and acoustic performance (often also called IGU with three cavities).

By safety/structural features:

Tempered (toughened) — higher strength and safer breakage pattern.

Laminated — glass interlayer holds fragments, improves security and acoustic damping.

Fire-rated IGUs — specialized construction for fire resistance.

Typical construction parameters

Pane thickness: commonly 4–10 mm per pane (varies by application).

Cavity width: typically 6–20 mm for air/argon; krypton often uses narrower gaps (~6–12 mm).

Applications

Residential windows and doors — energy-efficient replacements and new builds.

Commercial façades and curtain walls — thermal control and daylighting in offices, malls.

Skylights and roof glazing — controlled daylight with improved insulation.

Sound-sensitive environments — hospitals, recording studios, busy urban residences.

High-performance or passive buildings — triple or gas-filled IGUs with low-E coatings.

Specialized uses — fire-rated glazing, bullet-resistant laminated IGUs.
